International Brokerage Event and Scientific Conference on the topic »Sustainable Land Management and Vulnerable Ecosystems«

National Biological Centre, Ljubljana, Slovenia
15-17 January 2003

On January 15th and 16th 2003, an international brokerage event of project proposals within the framework of the regional cooperation initiative “TriCo”, supporting the research and development collaboration within the Alps-Adria Region and scientific conference within the frame of the Bioplatform - European platform for biodiversity took place in the National Biological Centre, Ljubljana. The brokerage event – the 7th so far within the “TriCo” initiative entitled "Sustainable Land Management and Vulnerable Ecosystems" – aimed at preparation of the scientific and research community and the economy in the region for successful partnerships in the regional programmes (Interreg, CBC) and in the 6th Framework RTD Programme (2002-2006) on the topics dealing with sustainable development, was much more comprehensive than the previous events (see Final programme). Parallel to project presentations and brokerage sessions, a scientific conference in the frame of the project "Bioplatform", a thematic network from the 5th Framework Programme serving EPBRS (»European Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy«) was taking place. In addition to researchers and experts from the six countries of the Alps-Adria region, research groups from further 14 European countries were taking part in the scientific conference.

The event focused research in the 6th Framework Programme on the topics of:

  1. Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry - New Concepts, Strategies and Tools for Sustainable Land Management;
  2. Integrated Management of Natural Resources for Sustainable Development and Tourism;
  3. Fragmentation of Ecosystems in Sensitive Areas - i.e. Wetlands.

Simultaneously with the project brokerage event, in which more than 180 researchers (see List of participants) from 20 countries discussed the ideas of project proposals (see Project catalogue) on the subject of "Sustainable Land Management and Vulnerable Ecosystems" intended for submission to the calls of the 6th Framework RTD programme and regional RTD programmes, participants also took part in discussions and preparation of scientific background for the establishment of national platforms for research in the sphere of biodiversity in order to foster close cooperation of various experts from the fields of biology, spatial planning, sustainable development, biodiversity and representatives of the line ministries, contributing to the shaping of national policies in the field of research for sustainable development.

MAIN GOALS

Goals of the brokerage event and scientific conference were the following:

  • to match R&D potentials in the Candidate Countries with the proposed Integrated Projects and Networks of Excellence for the First Calls of FP6 in the above mentioned topics;
  • to bridge sustainability research with policy making;
  • to bridge conflicts between physical planning, development activities, multifunctionality and biodiversity;
  • to present possibilities for sustainability research in FP6 - Priority 6.3. "Global change and Ecosystems", Priority 8 "Policy oriented research" and other programmes (Interreg, LIFE, GEF, etc) and
